Rodney Coast Challenge
The Rodney Coast Challenge is an example of the team building activities that 3M New Zealand employees are
encouraged to take part in. The multi sport event is run by the Kaukapakapa Scout group as a fundraiser, and takes place every October. The event consists of a 10km forest run, a 30km road cycle, 24km mountain bike, 8km kayak and at 150 metre sprint to finish. The Rodney Coast Challenge usually attracts more than 300 participants.
In 2010 24 3M New Zealand employees took part.
Tread Lightly Caravan

3M New Zealand sponsor the Tread Lightly Caravan. This charity offers a unique opportunity to invest in our team & the community. We offer every employee the opportunity to volunteer one school day per year. 3M’ers are able to attend their children’s schools manning environmental exhibits, teaching children how everyday life choices impact on the environment.
Employee Profiles
Debra - Asia Pacific Area Manager, Total Compensation Services
Debra is the Asia Pacific Area Manager, Total Compensation Services for 3M Human Resources based in New Zealand. Her role covers the four areas of compensation, benefits, HR systems, mergers and acquisitions within APAC and she looks after a team who is responsible for defining, designing, explaining and providing training in these areas.
A large part of Debra’s job is communicating with colleagues from 3M offices around Asia through teleconference, email, video conferences and instant messaging. She regularly has calls with other 3M locations worldwide and also communicates frequently with Human Resources Managers in the APAC subsidiaries.
Debra finds her regional role exciting, rewarding and enjoys interacting with employees from abroad as well as locally. She says 3M is like a large extended family where she is always treated like a relative when she travels and 3M colleagues overseas go to great lengths to make her feel welcome in their country.
Paul - Supply Chain & Operations Manager
Paul is the Supply Chain & Operations Manager for the 3M New Zealand supply chain. He is responsible for many of the support functions of 3M including the warehouse, distribution and purchasing.
While his role changes from day to day, Paul says ultimately his role is about providing excellence in service to our customers by supporting and enabling our business teams with best in class supply chain solutions.
Paul says creating positive change is the best part about his role at 3M. Paul credits the company’s history, ethics and values for creating a strong brand and culture of innovation within 3M. Paul feels that there is a high level of support for staff which encourages development, and fosters loyalty, ownership and a sense of stability within the company.
